Thousands of runners will take over city streets on Sunday due to the Toronto Marathon, and police are warning drivers there will be road closures.

The Toronto Marathon features a number of races with the full marathon beginning at 7:30 a.m. That will be followed by the half marathon walk, 10 kilometre run and 5 kilometre walk, at 8 a.m. At 8:15 a.m., the five kilometre run gets underway, while at 8:30 a.m., the half marathon run will start.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the areas identified as part of the routes and consider road closures when planning their travels," police said in a recent news release.

"This event will proceed regardless of weather conditions."

As for public transit, police said officers will direct TTC vehicles through gaps in the runs where possible, and when it is safe to let the vehicles pass.

"Every attempt will be made to minimize service interruptions," police said.
