Woman dead, sister injured after being hit by SUV near Bremner and Spadina
SUV accelerated and plowed into food vendor tent on Bremner killing woman, eyewitness said
A woman is dead and her sister is injured after an SUV jumped the curb near Bremner Boulevard and Spadina Avenue and slammed into a food vendor's tent they were working in on Tuesday afternoon.
Const. Hugh.Smith of Toronto Police told CBC News the woman who died was 38.
Her sister, who is 35, was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Smith said.
An eyewitness told CBC News that a black SUV travelling westbound on Bremner Boulevard near the Rogers Centre suddenly accelerated, veered off the street onto the sidewalk and plowed into the vendor's tent.
Smith said the sisters are from Toronto and were vendors at a sidewalk bazaar which is located a few metres away from the sidewalk.
Packed traffic around the Rogers Centre for the Jays game and Bremner remains CLOSED Spadina to Navy Wharf due to a collision.
—@CBCTrafficTOMayor John Tory said he was saddened by the news of the woman's death, adding that he would renew his call to the provincial government to increase penalties "for those who kill or injure people while driving."
He said he would also ask Toronto police to step up their enforcement of distracted and dangerous driving.
In a statement, Tory urged "drivers to slow down, stop aggressive behaviours and store their mobile devices. I would also ask cyclists and pedestrians to obey the rules of the road."
Investigators have not yet determined what caused the SUV to jump the curb.
Bremner was closed to traffic from Navy Wharf Court to Spadina but reopened five hours later.
