B.C. teachers tentative deal seen as positive by Windsor unions
Windsor's teachers unions are welcoming the news of a tentative deal for British Columbia's teachers, which could have them vote to end their strike action on Thursday and have students back in class by early next week.
Teachers in B.C. launched full-scale job action almost two weeks before the end of the school year in June
Students have missed more than two weeks of the 2014/2015 school year.
"All teachers in Ontario are very proud of them," said Donald Garant, with the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association.
"We understand that bargaining is a very challenging time. We commend them for the courage B.C. teachers shown. They continue to stand up for the public and they continue to stand up for the student in their classroom," said Garant.
Jeff Brosseau, who speaks for District 9 of the Ontario Secondary School Teacher's Association, said he's not fully convinced.
"The fact that it exists is a positive sign," said Brosseau, of the B.C. deal. "I know that the students out there as well as the students want to get back to school. But given the dealings that the B.C. government has had in the past with dealing with the teachers federation I remain skeptical until I get more details."
A spokeswoman for the B.C. teachers federation tweeted that teachers could vote on the tentative deal on Thursday.
