Michigan and several groups have announced the creation of a kayak and canoe trail on the Detroit River, with a stop at Belle Isle Park in Detroit.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the Metropolitan Affairs Coalition and others announced the Detroit Heritage River Water Trail on Tuesday.
The trail will have 23 paddling points, including Rotary Park, Elizabeth Park and Lake Erie Metropark. Canoes and kayaks will be available for rent.
Planning will continue this summer, with guides leading sample trips to gather additional comment.
Organizers say they expect to complete the trail in December. They say they hope to revive horseback riding on the island by summer 2016.
Michigan took over the park's operations from Detroit last year.
