Nominations are now open for a council seat in the Town of LaSalle.

Councilors voted Tuesday to proceed with a byelection to replace Coun. Sue Desjarlais, who died in April.

People interested in running must submit their nomination forms by 2 p.m. on Sept. 5, Mayor Crystal Meloche told council.

Voting will take place between Oct. 10 and Oct. 20.

Desjarlais was elected to LaSalle town council in 2006 and served for nearly 20 years.

She had been on medical leave prior to her death, but Meloche nonetheless described her passing as a shock.

Council declared Desjarlais' position vacant at its May 13 meeting.

It voted on May 27 to hold a byelection to replace her.

Ontario's next municipal elections will be held in October of 2026.
