One man sent to hospital, fire now out at downtown Windsor apartment building
All but two residents were able to go back to their homes
A fire that started Tuesday afternoon on a balcony — of an upper level unit of Le Goyeau Condominiums — is now out.
A Windsor fire spokesperson said one man is in hospital being treated for smoke inhalation.
Crews closed down sections of Riverside Drive East and Goyeau Street as they rushed to fight the fire on the 12th floor of the building.
Flames and smoke could be seen coming from the balcony of the unit.
Adrian Derikozis was listening to music through his headphones when he heard an alarm go off in his building.
"I grabbed some valuables in my backpack because I smelled smoke right after that," he said.
He said he felt safe leaving the building and didn't smell smoke in the hallways.
Some residents could be seen on their balconies while crews fought the fire.
"We've been told and also just judging by the building, it's all cement and concrete and steel, but the smart thing to do would be to get out," said Derikozis.
Fire officials evacuated the floor where the fire started, but asked people from other floors to remain in their units as firefighters ran up and down stairwells to battle the flames.
After the situation was controlled, officials said all residents were able to return to their units, except for 1201.
The fire was caused by an electrical failure and caused $125,000 in damage. Two residents were displaced.
The 15-floor building is on the corner of Riverside Drive East and Goyeau Street.
