An increasing number of mosquito pools have tested positive for West Nile virus in Windsor-Essex this summer, leading health officials to remind the public to protect themselves from getting bit.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit says nine mosquito pools across the region have tested positive for West Nile virus since June 24. The newly released total follows a prior report that positive tests had resulted from samples collected in both the city and the county.

The health unit provides a number of tips for avoiding mosquito bites and preventing the spread of the virus.

They include eliminating sources of standing water and limiting the time spent outdoors when mosquitoes are most active.

No human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in Windsor-Essex so far this year.
