Pedestrian, 27, killed after driver goes on sidewalk, crashes into building: police
Windsor police have arrested a 28-year-old driver and say a loaded firearm was found in her truck
The driver of a rental moving truck has been arrested after a truck struck and killed a 27-year-old woman in the 4700 block of Tecumseh Road E., say Windsor police.
The fatal collision happened shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday. Police officers were sent to the area, where they say a rental moving truck drove onto the sidewalk, struck a pedestrian, and crashed into a commercial building.
"The pedestrian, a 27-year-old woman, was pronounced deceased at the scene," police said in a Sunday news release.
Shattered glass and debris were present at the scene Sunday afternoon and the impacted parts of the business, Windsor Trim Supplier, had wooden panels sealing the damaged area.
Windsor police arrested a 28-year-old woman who they say was driving the truck. The area was closed for several hours while members of the Windsor Police Collision Reconstruction and Forensic Identification Units processed the scene.
"At this time, there is no evidence to suggest that this was a targeted incident or that the individuals involved knew one another," police said in a statement Monday. "The collision appears to be isolated; however, we will continue to follow all leads to ensure a thorough and accurate investigation."
CBC spoke with businesses in the vicinity that described heavily backed up traffic and sirens late into evening.
"During a search of the rental truck, officers located and seized a loaded firearm," police said.
The arrested driver will face the following charges:

Possession of a loaded firearm.

Possession of a firearm with an altered serial number.

Possession of a firearm with no licence.

Occupying a motor vehicle with a firearm.
-
Occupying a motor vehicle with a prohibited device.

Possession of a prohibited device.

Careless storage of a firearm.
The investigation is ongoing and police said additional charges are anticipated.
Anyone who witnessed the collision, or has information or video footage of the incident, is being asked to contact the Windsor Police Service Traffic Enforcement Unit.
This is the second fatal crash involving a pedestrian in Windsor this year. A 47-year-old woman was killed by a passing pickup truck in January.
