Rampaging inmate causes $15K damage at Windsor's Detention Centre
A rampaging inmate at Windsor's South West Detention Centre has caused thousands of dollars in damage to the facility.
Video equipment was destroyed, windows broken and a shower door ripped off.
Windsor West NDP MPP Lisa Gretzky said events such as this happen too frequently.
"It begins to paint a pretty accurate picture of what's going on in the correctional services across the province," said Gretzky. "I've toured a few facilities, and the common theme in that is overcrowding and understaffing."
The province is not managing the correctional system properly, she said.
"If you were to staff these facilities correctly, not only would it be a safer place, but I think you would see that the salaries come in line," said Gretzky. "If we can pay a lot of overtime, the province can certainly afford to staff the facilities correctly."
No other inmates or correctional officers were injured.
A spokesperson for the union representing the correctional officers that work at the jail did not immediately return calls about the matter to CBC News.
The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services said it could not comment on the details of the incident because of an ongoing investigation.
But spokesperson Brent Ross said the jail is currently under capacity, with only 253 of the 283 beds within it being used.
"The institution is also appropriately staffed at this time and we plan to bring more staff on board as needed," he said.
Windsor police are investigating the incident.
