Recycling collection in Windsor will be back to normal Tuesday following delays caused by massive flood cleanup.

Residents whose bins are overflowing are asked to use cardboard boxes for excess items, instead of plastic bags.

If bags must be used, staff stated in a media release, they should be clear and items must still be separated.

The City of Windsor had received 6,008 basement flooding reports as of the morning of Sept. 11, 2017.

Close of 5,000 tonnes of flood-damaged material has been collected, according to the city.

"It's been a real team effort between City staff, residents and all our partners: GFL Canada, Waste Connections, Miller Waste, Diponti Paving, Jones Group Inc., Belmont Construction, and the Town of Tecumseh," wrote Environmental Services Manager Anne Marie Albidone in a media release.  "We've all been working very hard to get our neighbourhoods back to normal, and we're almost there."

A second pass of hard-hit parts of the city is ongoing, but any residents who still piles of damaged items to be picked up should call 311 to arrange an individual pickup.

"We want to ensure every resident who flooded is helped as much as possible," Albidone added.
