Windsor police are investigating after two separate incidents over the weekend, including one theft in which the thief made out with about $50,000 in jewelry. The CBC's Chris Ensing reports.

Two separate jewelry stores at Tecumseh Mall were targeted in smash-and-grab style robberies across three days, according to Windsor police.

Police say a man made off with an estimated $50,000 in jewelry on Friday after a suspect smashed open a glass showcase with a weapon.

The suspect was covering his face with a blue scarf and fled in a black GMC Sierra with chrome accents, police say.

On Sunday, at a different jewelry store inside the same mall, a person tried to smash open a glass showcase to rob the store.

This incident took place around 2 p.m. Sunday.

"A man, wearing a black face covering and black clothing, entered the store and used a weapon to attempt to smash a glass display case," police said in a statement.

"When the glass did not break, the suspect fled the scene and was seen by witnesses entering a 2001 silver Chrysler Sebring parked outside the mall."

Police say they later located the vehicle unoccupied in the 2600 block of Meadowbrook Lane and have seized the vehicle.

Residents and businesses with dash and surveillance cameras, especially those on Meadowbrook Lane and near the mall, are asked to check their cameras for possible evidence between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

A spokesperson for Tecumseh Mall declined to comment on the incidents, but said it's business as usual at the mall and all stores are open.

"As per our policy and procedures, we take the safety and security of our shoppers very seriously and will not tolerate any kind or form of violence and/or criminal activity and do everything we can to ensure the continued safety of our patrons."
