Police have lifted an order for Walpole Island residents to stay inside due to a "weapons investigation."

OPP said just before 2 p.m. that hold-and-secure and shelter-in-place orders announced Sunday morning for the southwestern Ontario community were no longer in effect.

There will be an increased police presence in the area of Chiefs Road South, the service said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Officers told the public to avoid the area.

CBC News has asked for additional information about the incident. Citing the ongoing investigation, a spokesperson for OPP said "no further updates are available at this time."

In a social media post at around 11 a.m. Sunday, OPP told the community the orders not to go outside were in effect. The service said that Lambton County OPP and Walpole Island Police were conducting a weapons investigation.

Police described the orders as a precaution, but asked residents to report any suspicious activity to 911.
