World Snake Day celebrations at Ojibway Nature Centre

They will celebrate World Snake Day at the Ojibway Nature Centre in Windsor on Wednesday.

There will be presentations and crafts, running from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

For many snake lovers, the highlight will be a chance to pet and hold various species.

Karen Cedar, the education co-ordinator at Ojibway, admits many people would rather stay far away from the reptiles.

"Snakes are one of those things that we're kind of taught to not like, and one of our missions here is to teach people the proper information about snakes. Once you know the truth about them, it's really hard to not like them," she said.

Cedar says snakes are an important part of the ecosystem because larger predators eat them, while snakes, in turn, feast on mice and other critters that humans consider pests.

CBC Windsor's Peter Duck, who is hosting the Bridge this week, spoke to Cedar at length Tuesday.
