Federal Green Party Leader Elizabeth May says Peter Bevan-Baker, who made history Monday night in the P.E.I. general election, will "change the legislature" in the province.

May, who was in Charlottetown on Friday to support the Green campaign, said Bevan-Baker will bring to P.E.I. government "decency, ethical behaviour" and a "willingness to work across party lines."

She says it's not an oddity that Bevan-Baker won his district, noting that the four Greens who have been elected — herself federally, Andrew Weaver in B.C., David Coon in New Brunswick last fall and now Bevan-Baker — have all beaten out sitting cabinet ministers.

"I think people really do want change and when they see an opportunity, they grab it. They grab it with both hands."

Bevan-Baker won the district of Kellys Cross–Cumberland with 55 per cent of the votes to Liberal Valerie Docherty's 28 per cent. Progressive Conservative candidate Randy Robar finished third with 16 per cent.
