Bieber wins best dance recording, Weeknd wins best R&B performance, best urban contemporary album
Justin Bieber and The Weeknd have won their first Grammy awards, joining Joni Mitchell and other Canadians who were also given trophies as the pre-televised show honours were handed out in Los Angeles.
Justin Bieber, whose hometown is Stratford, Ont., won best dance recording for the song Where Are U Now alongside EDM hitmakers Diplo and Skrillex. This is Bieber's first Grammy.
The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, has picked up two awards: best R&B performance for the Fifty Shades of Grey song Earned it and best urban contemporary album for Beauty Behind the Madness.
Co-writer and producer Stephan Moccio, who is also Canadian and shares a credit for the album, accepted the award on The Weeknd's behalf. He thanked Tesfaye's entire Toronto team in his acceptance speech.
Jan Haust, a native of London, Ont., and Hamilton's Peter Moore captured the honour for best historical album for The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11, featuring the music of Bob Dylan and Toronto's The Band. The duo shared the award with Steve Berkowitz, Jeff Rosen and Mark Wilder.
The top awards will be given out during Monday evening's televised ceremony.
