Frozen gives the Disney princess a modern makeover

Frozen, Disney’s newest animated feature, aims to warm the hearts of the audience with a snow-swept landscape.

Loosely based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Snow Queen, Frozen follows the icy adventures of two sisters voiced by Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel. Menzel’s character Elsa the Snow Queen struggles to control her powers while also protecting her younger sister Anna, played by Bell.

Comedy star Josh Gad says the two strong female siblings in Frozen resonate with his young daughter.

Gad, who voices a sentient snowman named Olaf, says he thinks Frozen is one of the most female-empowering stories in the Disney animated canon. Co-director Jennifer Lee, a screenwriter for last year’s Wreck-it-Ralph, became the first woman to direct a full-length animated feature for Disney.

CBC’s Eli Glasner laced up a pair of skates at Toronto's Nathan Phillips Square for some ice time of his own for his review of the film which he says “gives the princess picture a modern makeover.”
