James Bond Spectre title song duties go to Sam Smith
Smith penned new Bond track with his Stay With Me co-writer
Grammy Award-winner Sam Smith was confirmed Tuesday as the artist chosen for theme song duties for Spectre, the 24th James Bond film.
The British-born crooner's song Writing's On The Wall will debut on Sept. 25, about a month before the film has its premiere.
Smith hinted at his selection as the next Bond singer in a series of social media posts on Monday.
"I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations," he said in the official statement on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old was named best new artist at the Grammys earlier this year, winning four awards overall. Stay With Me won Grammys for song and record of the year and In the Lonely Hour was named best pop vocal album.
As with Stay With Me, the upcoming Bond track is credited to Smith and British songwriter Jimmy Napes.
Spectre will be released on Oct. 26 in the United Kingdom and on Nov. 6 in Canada and the United States.
It will be Daniel Craig's fourth go-around as Agent 007 and the second consecutive film in the franchise directed by Sam Mendes.
Mendes also helmed Skyfall, whose title track netted an Academy Award and Golden Globe for best song for British singer Adele.
Shirley Bassey, Paul McCartney, Duran Duran, Tina Turner and Madonna are among the other artists who've recorded title tracks for Bond films.
