Jeremy Shaw wins 2016 Sobey Art Award
Berlin-based multi-media artist is known for his video and film installations
Vancouver-born multi-media artist Jeremy Shaw was award the Sobey Art Award on Tuesday.
The recognition, announced at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, comes with a $50,000 prize.
"Jeremy Shaw's work speaks to a fundamental longing for transcendence. He creates and reflects extraordinary experiences and shows us how art can translate what is challenging to articulate," read the jury statement.
Other finalist include Brenda Draney of Alberta, Charles Stankievech of Ontario, Hajra Waheed of Quebec and William Robinson from Atlantic Canada. Each finalist will be awarded $10,000.

Shaw, currently based in Berlin and representing the West Coast and Yukon region at the Sobey awards, is known for his video and film installations like Quickeners and Variation FQ.
The Sobey award was launched in 2001 with a view to raising the "prestige and profile of contemporary art and the work of younger Canadian artists."
The work of Shaw and the other finalists have been on display in a group exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada since Oct. 6. The exhibit runs until Feb. 5, 2017.
