Stevie Wonder appeared on stage before a crowd of thousands in front of city hall in Los Angeles Friday night to pay tribute to Prince.

"What an incredible life, music and legacy that he gave us," Wonder told the crowd, many of whom were dressed in purple. "I think the only thing we can do in the spirit of Prince is to learn to truly love one another and come together."

Prince died April 21 at his recording studio home in suburban Minneapolis. He was 57. The cause is still being investigated.

R&B musicians Eric Benet and Faith Evans, among others, joined Wonder's headlining performance and also sang some of Prince's most popular hits.

Benet, who is married to Prince's former Canadian wife Manuela Testolini, performed Rasberry Beret  and I Wanna Be Your Lover. Evans sang I Feel for You.

City hall was chosen for the music event partly because it's the location where Prince filmed the video for his 1991 song Diamonds and Pearls.

Wonder closed the evening with a heart-felt rendition of Purple Rain. Check it out below.
