Actors Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively delighted patients and staff at a Sudbury, Ont. hospital on the weekend by popping in for a surprise visit.

Vancouver-born Reynolds took a break from filming scenes for Atom Egoyan's upcoming drama Queen of the Night on Sunday to join his American wife Lively for a "low-key" visit to the pediatric unit of Health Sciences North, a trauma centre.

A hospital spokesperson told local media that the children, parents and staff at the hospital appreciated the visit, photos of which were shared on Facebook by relatives and fan accounts.

The two actors apparently helped brighten the day for young patients in the pediatric unit by chatting with them and their families.

"Ryan and Blake were both very kind to us. They introduced themselves right away and asked how my son was doing," Sudbury resident Sarah Lavallee told Sudbury Northern Life newspaper.

"I really appreciated both Ryan and Blake giving me something to smile about at such a difficult time."

Reynolds, 36, and Lively, 25, appeared together in 2011's Green Lantern. The pair married in September.

In Queen of the Night, which co-stars Scott Speedman and Rosario Dawson, Canadian actor Reynolds plays a man searching for his kidnapped child.
