For years, CIA agent Tony Mendez's exploits extracting key figures from hot zones remained classified information.

Now, Ben Affleck's new political thriller Argo, debuting at TIFF, is shining Hollywood's spotlight on the retired spy behind the high-profile rescue dubbed the Canadian Caper.

While Ken Taylor, then Canadian ambassador to Iran, and his wife Pat were decidedly involved in hiding six U.S. diplomats amid the Iranian revolution, the CIA was in charge of getting the Americans out of the country. Mendez led the effort.
