Toy Story 3 named best-reviewed movie of 2010
Popular website RottenTomatoes.com, which aggregates both professional and amateur movie reviews, announced Toy Story 3 the top winner of its annual Golden Tomato Awards.
The film completes the trilogy about toys — led by cowboy doll Woody and astronaut figure Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, respectively) — that come to life. The motley crew of playthings is faced with obsolescence when their beloved young owner, Andy, prepares to leave home for college.
It is the fourth consecutive year a Pixar title has won the website's top award. The animation studio's film Up tied with The Hurt Locker in 2009, while 2008's Wall-E and 2007's Ratatouille were also previous winners.
Another animated tale, How to Train Your Dragon, placed second in the tally of top-reviewed 2010 wide releases. Rounding out the top five are Facebook tale The Social Network, revamped western True Grit and British monarchy drama The King's Speech.
Chinese-Canadian filmmaker Lixin Fan's acclaimed documentary Last Train Home, which explores the struggles faced by the migrant workers fuelling China's economic boom, was the top-reviewed film among limited releases — movies that initially opened in 500 or fewer theatres. It had a 100 per cent positive rating.
The site also revealed the top-reviewed films in a range of different genres, including:
- Action/Adventure: True Grit
- Animation: Toy Story 3
- Comedy: The Kids Are All Right
- Documentary: Marwencol
- Drama: The Social Network
- Foreign: Last Train Home
- Horror: Let Me In
- Kids/Family: Nanny McPhee Returns
- Musical: The Runaways
- Romance: Cairo Time
- Sci-fi/Fantasy: Inception
- Thriller: Animal Kingdom
More dubiously, site organizers also revealed the list of "Moldy Tomato" films — those that received the lowest ratings of the entire year.
The top three films on the worst-reviewed list include the teen movie spoof Vampires Suck, M. Night Shyamalan's failed adaptation of popular cartoon The Last Airbender and the Jennifer Aniston romantic comedy The Bounty Hunter.
