CBC's Turning Point panel discusses ISIS's tactics and the world's response
Can the war between the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and its enemies be won by either side?
CBC's Turning Point panel discusses whether ISIS's violent propaganda is effective, where its support comes from and whether airstrikes are enough to defeat them.
CBC chief correspondent Peter Mansbridge leads the discussion with:
- Janice Stein, founding director of the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto.
- Ray Boisvert, former assistant director of intelligence at the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.
- Saeed Khan, a professor at Michigan's Wayne State University.
- Samantha Nutt, founder of War Child Canada
"It's the violence that acts as a magnet," Stein said. "It glorifes the movement, it's effective in recruiting, it's effective in fundraising and it's effective in burnishing the reputation of the Islamic State as the standup group in the region that defies the West."
