Five finalists in each of 14 categories were announced Monday for the third annual awards, which will take place April 21 at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

Out of the 28 games represented, SuperBrothers: Sword & Sorcery, a touch-driven adventure game made by independent studio Capybara Games, was a finalist in the most categories — nine — including Best Game on the Go, Best Game Design and Best Visual Arts. The game, which runs only on Apple mobile devices, describes its low-res visual style as "painterly pixel artwork" and has already won an achievement in art award from Independent Games Festival Mobile.

Eidos Montreal's cyberpunk role-playing game Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Ubisoft Montreal's stealth adventure game Assassin's Creed Revelations were the console games with the most nominations, at eight apiece.

In order to be eligible for the awards, games must have been developed in Canada and released in 2011.

The winners in 13 of the 14 categories will be chosen by "industry experts," while the public is invited to vote for "game of the year" at the Canadian Video Game Awards website.
