Indigenous issues and particularly the struggles girls and women face were thrust into the spotlight due in large part to the efforts of Marlene Bird. Bird was brutally assaulted and set on fire three years ago; her burns were so bad that doctors had to amputate her legs. Today, Bird's family confirmed she was taken off life support. She may be gone, but her story will serve as a reminder of the struggles many Indigenous women like Bird face
