My Idol app produces scary and hilarious avatars

My Idol is the internet's latest, and perhaps creepiest, obsession. The avatar generator, currently trending in the app store, is a Chinese application written in Chinese. The language barrier is causing some confusion for increasingly hooked users, and it may be what's making some of the results even more ridiculous.

My Idol is the internet's latest, and perhaps creepiest, obsession. The avatar generator, currently trending in the app store, is a Chinese application written in Chinese. The language barrier is causing some confusion for increasingly hooked users, and that could be making some of the results even more ridiculous.

How it works: After taking or uploading a selfie, users can dress their cartoon avatar (think Bratz doll meets dancing baby) and make it do stuff like pole-dance or sing Frozen's Let it Go on an icy throne.

Some have had trouble getting the app to assign them the right gender, but according to Elle's English translation of the instructions, that may be an easy fix.

If you don't have time to play around with it (although we recommend you do), Mashable has done some of the heavy lifting and offered up My Idol tips for getting your perfect cartoon doppelganger.

You can also upload photos of friends, celebrities and famous faces. Ever wanted to see world leaders pole-dance? Apparently you aren't alone.

What happens when you give your pets the My Idol treatment

Some users tried making avatars of their pets, with results ranging from horrifying to kind of cute.
