Why B.C. stopped funding a $1M drug for a girl with a terminal condition.
The B.C. government has decided to stop funding medication for a Vancouver Island girl's rare disease. Nine-year-old Charleigh Pollock has CLN2, or Batten disease, which causes multiple seizures daily. Officials say the decision was based on Charleigh's declining motor and language function, which meets criteria that show the drug is no longer effective at slowing the disease. Batten Disease Global Research Initiative’s Ineka Whiteman says the criteria used to make the decision are outdated, and new evidence and research show the drug helps more than just motor and language scores.
