Peter Doig paints poster for 'overjoyed' Ontario film festival

One of his paintings recently sold for $25.9 million. But you can pick up Canadian-raised artist Peter Doig's latest work for a much more modest sum, if you make the trip to Cobourg, Ont.

Cobourg and Port Hope's Vintage Film Festival is about as far from TIFF or Cannes as you can get. But this year, the tiny fest landed a big name to design their poster: superstar Canadian-raised artist Peter Doig.

Michael Hanlon is a board member for the festival. He tells As It Happens co-host Carol Off, how he reacted when he heard the news:

"My first response was to go out and turn handsprings in the street. We were overjoyed here."

Hanlon waged a secret campaign for months to get Doig interested in the project. The whole caper began when Hanlon met the artist's parents David and Mary Doig -- who live in the area -- in a parking lot in Cobourg.

They agreed to make the request to Peter Doig, who is based in the U.K and Trinidad.

"David Doig said to somebody recently, 'I think Peter did it to please his mother,' which is nice."

Doig's art can fetch millions. His last work to go to auction was sold for $25.9 million. In contrast, the Vintage Film Festival is selling prints of the donated painting for $30 each.

But you can only get one if you attend the festival. It runs from October 23 - 25 in Cobourg and Port Hope, Ont.
