You can buy this apocalypse-ready truck known as 'The Breaker of Rocks' on Craigslist
Need a truck to ride out the zombie apocalypse in? Look no further.
Kathryn Egan of Morro Bay, Calif., is selling her massive, souped-up Ford 350 named Bula Matari, or "Breaker of Rocks," on Craigslist, for $30,000 US ($39,627 Cdn).
But Egan says she'll only sell it to someone who will honour the memory of her late husband Brian, who built the beast with his own two hands.
"My husband had this twinkle in his eye and, you know, I keep looking for that," Egan told As It Happens host Carol Off.
"He was this person who was waiting for the sun to come up in the morning so he could go out and work on the truck, and I think that enthusiasm for the truck is one of things I am looking for — and someone who can continue the adventures and the dream."
Mechanical expertise, she said, is also a bonus.
"He had this little process he went through. He would think about it, do some research, then he would draw it up, mock it up, build it, and then think about it some more, and if he didn't like it, he re-did it."
The pricetag may seem steep, but Bula is built to transport a Porsche Spyder, a nine-metre sailboat, a motorcycle, a 5.4-metre kayak with mast and sail on and two bicycles — all at the same time.
"It was his dream to carry all of his toys wherever he went," Egan said. "He had fun building this."
None of those vehicles are included in the sale, noted Egan, who said any buyer will "absolutely have to have their own toys."
And it doubles as a camper, complete with a propane stove, a refrigerator, a microwave, a hot water tank, an air conditioning unit, a wood fireplace, a safe and sleeping room for four adults.
"We definitely had a lot of fun in it," Egan said, recalling road trips along California's Big Sur Highway1. But, she stopped short of calling the cozy living space romantic. "I think that the truck kind of smells of testosterone, I mean, really it's just a boy toy."
Nevertheless, it took her four years since her husband's death in 2013 to bring herself to list his beloved creation.
"It's sitting out in front of our home and when I open the front door, there it is, and it just reminds me so much of — it's just totally Brian," she said. "But it's time. It's time to move on."
