Exit: Music reveals 5 Jewish composers whose works were lost in Nazi Germany
The ARC Ensemble's artistic director, Simon Wynberg, explains the importance of resurfacing works by Paul Ben-Haim, Walter Braunfels and other Jewish composers from the '30s.
In the early '30s, Germany was flourishing with musicians and composers. But, during the rise of the Third Reich, thousands of them were forced to flee Europe and most of their works were buried in history.
Slowly but surely, some of that music is starting to resurface in the form of stories, archival footage and even performances by the artists of the Royal Conservatory.
This is all the subject of a new documentary called Exit: Music and the ARC Ensemble's Artistic Director Simon Wynberg will join us on the show today to discuss the hidden histories of the five composers featured in the film.
