Iliza Shlesinger on laughing with women not at them
Comedian Iliza Shlesinger built her career by making fun of other women. Now, she's evolved her material to come from a place of strength and empowerment for women.
Comedian Iliza Shlesinger says she built her career in comedy off making fun of other women. But in 2015 she watched a fellow comic verbally attack a female colleague on stage — unprovoked — and something clicked. From that moment on Shlesinger completely changed her act. Now Shlesinger's comedy comes from a place of strength and empowerment for women, which she feels is important if there's any hope for women to be treated equally in the industry. The comedian dropped by the q studio to speak with Tom Power about why it's important for comedians to evolve their material and the very real dangers of being a female comic on the road.
