The 89th Academy Awards certainly lived up to the dramatics the ceremony has come to be know for.

Tom Power sits down with Kiva Reardon, the founding editor of cléo, a journal of film and feminism, and CBC's Amanda Parris for q's Oscars recap.

The stand-out moment from the last night's awards was the accidental announcement that La La Land had won best picture rather than the true winner, Moonlight. Reardon says that while both films were excellent for the current climate, Moonlight deserved the win. "[La La Land] is sort of rear-looking, it's nostalgic, it's not speaking to what's happening right now. Whereas Moonlight is doing exactly that and doing it in the most powerful and beautiful and cinematic way that it really deserved to win."

Parris's takeaway from the flub: "Life lesson, never in a rage turn off the television until the end credits!"
