'Transparent' creator Jill Soloway taps family story for bold TV
Emmy-nominated TV writer on her dramedy about a parent who comes out to her family.
Emmy-nominated TV writer Jill Soloway (Six Feet Under) joins Jian to talk about her new critically-celebrated series Transparent -- a dramedy starring Jeffrey Tambor as a transgender woman who comes out to her family.
The story was inspired by Soloway's own father ("We use the word 'parent,'" she says), who came out to her over the phone three years ago.
"I was mostly saying really nice things like 'I love you' and 'I'm proud of you', and then in the back of my mind, I was like, "I've got a TV show,'" she says.
"[The show] is informed by our family," Soloway adds, "but it's totally fictional."
