'Do I Sound Gay?' David Thorpe explores a loaded question
Filmmaker David Thorpe takes a closer listen to the "gay voice" and asks whether or not it matters if gay men have a distinct vocal style.
What does it mean to "sound gay"? Is it a bad thing? Filmmaker David Thorpe explores these deceptively simple questions in his new documentary about the so-called gay voice.
Thorpe has long struggled with the way he sounds and what it signals to other people. In Do I Sound Gay he checks in with high-profile gay men — including sex columnist Dan Savage, TV's Tim Gunn and writer David Sedaris — as well as a straight man with an effeminate voice.
Thorpe joins guest host Talia Schlanger to share what he heard, and what vocal coaches mean when they talk about a "standard" voice.
