Best of Q: Shad performs from Flying Colours

Shad brings his clever, dexterous rhymes and storytelling laced with social commentary to Studio Q.

Shadrach Kabango, the artist known simply as Shad, has earned much praise since his self-financed debut album in 2005. Now one of Canada's most celebrated hip-hop performers, Shad's been long-listed for this year's prestigious Polaris Music Prize - and in 2011, he beat heavyweights like Drake to win the Juno for best rap recording.

It's easy to see what the fuss is all about. His beats are strong, but his trademarks are really his clever, dexterous rhymes and storytelling laced with social commentary.

In a conversation from the Best of Q, the Vancouver-based artist joins Jian to offer insight on his fourth album, Flying Colours, and to perform two vibrant tracks.

"I'm pretty obsessed with not boring people," he told Jian.

Not bad, huh?

♫ Now, when you're third world born, but first world formed, sometimes you feel pride, sometimes you feel torn.

Shad took part in a fun little instavid and rapped one of the most poignant lines from his song Fam Jam.
