Jon Fine explains why Your Band Sucks
As the Polaris Prize approaches, Shad talks to journalist Jon Fine about his new book Your Band Sucks: What I Saw At Indie Rock's Failed Revolution.
It's nothing unusual to see or hear indie rock in the mainstream these days — but Jon Fine remembers a time when it was nearly unheard of.
Fine played guitar in an indie rock trio in the 1980s, and he's spent the past 30 years watching the close circuit of that decade's clubs, labels, and fanzines transform into stadium success and car commercials for today's bands.
Now a journalist, his new book Your Band Sucks: What I Saw At Indie Rock's Failed Revolution (But Can No Longer Hear) details the evolution — and dilution — of the genre since those early days. He joins Shad to talk about the book and the shifts in the music world it outlines.
