George Carlin's daughter speaks: "Like him, I am a truth-teller"
What's it like to grow up with a father famous for his acerbic tongue? We peel back the layers with Kelly Carlin.
George Carlin made millions laugh with his unflinching humour and memorable rants, like Seven Words You Can Never Say on TV and Religion is Bulls---t. But only one person knows what the late comedian was like as a father — or, in Kelly Carlin's words: "the ultimate laissez-faire parent".
The writer, producer and radio host joins q guest host Talia Schlanger to discuss her candid new memoir, A Carlin Home Companion, and all the love and turmoil that shaped her. Her unconventional upbringing — which included shared weed, shouting matches and sharpened knives — is flush with both joy and hard-won lessons.
"We're a family that got through it," says Carlin, who shares the darkest parts of her family's story without placing them at the centre.
