Why the middle class is turning to the 'welfare diet'

We talk to cookbook author Leanne Brown and food security activist Christina Palassio about the willingness of the middle class to cook recipes from the "welfare diet".
Leanne Brown's "Good and Cheap" is full of simple, nutritious recipes that can be made for around $4/day. (Leanne Brown)

If you've got empty pockets to match your empty stomach, then being able to eat on $4 a day probably sounds like a dream come true.

But the "welfare diet" seems to be the latest culinary trend among those who can actually afford a much higher food budget.

Guest host Candy Palmater talks to Leanne Brown, author of Good and Cheap: Eat Well on $4 a Day, and Christina Palassio, communications director for Community Food Centres Canada, about what this trend says about the middle class's understanding of what it's really like to eat on a limited budget.
