Sleater-Kinney guitarist and Portlandia star Carrie Brownstein joins Shad to discuss Hunger Makes Me a Modern GirlThe revealing memoir, which was released last month to rave reviews, hinges on Brownstein's quest to find identity and belonging through creativity and music.

Sprung from the 1990s riot-grrrl scene, Sleater-Kinney's sound was both primal and political. And although many of Brownstein's greatest joys and challenges trace back to the band's initial run, she's quick to clarify that the book is not just a rock memoir.

Authors referenced by Brownstein in this interview:

"This is a story about going from a sense of feeling disembodied and invisible to one of embodiment and visibility," she says."Sleater-Kinney was a good container for that story."

Brownstein also opens up about little-known family struggles, the disorienting experience of being outed, and how absurdity has helped her make sense of the "greyness and murkiness" of life.
