John K Samson takes stock of modern Canada on Winter Wheat
Canadian songwriter John K Samson returns to q with his new record Winter Wheat which is inspired by Neil Young, Winnipeg and the fear of new social technology.
Once every four years or so, John K Samson emerges from his lair to unleash a new record onto the world. This is because Samson only averages about three songs a year, which Samson admits is "mostly deliberate and slow."
"I like having something to walk around with," he adds. "Having a song emerging is like getting to know someone — it's a lovely comrade."
This year, Samson returned with Winter Wheat and in it he tackles everything from the destructive effect of modern technology and social media to the vampiric oil industry of Alberta. While the topics may be heavy, inside there's an undercurrent of hope.
"It's tricky to write a song that's hopeful," Samson reveals. "But I recognized that the record needed that."
