Filmmaker John Singleton has died after being taken off life support, about two weeks after he suffered a major stroke. He was 51.

The director, screenwriter and producer was best known for his 1991 film, Boyz N the Hood, which takes a powerful look at the problems facing black communities in South Central Los Angeles.

The trailblazing film earned Singleton an Academy Award nomination for best director, making him the first African-American to be nominated in the category, as well as the youngest at 24 years old.

Canadian film and music video director, Director X, joined q's Tom Power live from Los Angeles to talk about Singleton's legacy and influence.
