When musician Alan Doyle thinks of the Tragically Hip, he thinks of Canada. Doyle, who joined us on the show today after hearing the news of Gord Downie's death, shared his favourite memories of Downie, but also explained why the band is such an integral part of the Canadian music scene.

"Gord and the guys were always completely unafraid and often eager to write songs about the tiniest little pieces of Canadiana from their own backyard," Doyle says. "They never tried to sound like they were from San Francisco or Los Angeles or London or New York — they were Canadian and they wrote songs about things that happened outside their window and that's really important."
