Satire panelists look back on 2014, searching for a silver lining

Satirist Terry Fallis and Comedian Amanda Barker try to find a bright side to a very dark year looking back on 2014.
It's been a year of tragic news from violence against women, missing or kidnapped women and girls ... to missing planes, including the AirAsia jet that search crews continue to look for in the Java Sea. But today, we're looking back at the year that was from a different perspective with two satirically-minded people reflecting on some of the absurd, under-reported stories of 2014.

Then there was the nut scandal on a Korean Air flight this month. Cho Hyun-ah, head of cabin service at Korean Air, demanded her macadamia nuts be served on a plate, not in a bag! She forced the plane to return to the gate at JFK airport in New York City. Cho Hyun-ah has resigned and apologized. Elana's Pantry

Altogether it was a year with more than its fair share of serious and violent news events ... ones we have certainly covered on this program.

But as the year draws to a close, we've asked a couple of satirically-minded panelists for their take on the more absurd, under-reported or even inspiring events of 2014.

  • Terry Fallis is the bestselling author of novels including "The Best Laid Plans" -- which was a Canada Reads winner -- and "The High Road". His latest book is "No Relation."

  • Amanda Barker is a comedian who's recently returned to Toronto after touring the United States with "Spank: The Fifty Shades of Grey Parody." She is a Second City alumni and ... believe it or not, she even worked as a Toronto Blue Jays mascot.

Both Terry and Amanda spoke with Piya Chattopadhyay earlier this month.
