The Current travels to Italy for a first hand look at how the small Calabrian town of Riace is trying to tackle the refugee crisis with a unique solution; embracing the migrants.

This season, The Current brings you Ripple Effect. You'll hear all sorts of different stories that have to do with unintended consequences... the happy accidents, or unforseen dire effects of anything from a government policy, to a technological breakthrough.

Starting off the series,Tuesday Sept 8th, we bring you a special documentary, "Reviving Riace", by host Anna Maria Tremonti, Lara O'Brien and Joan Webber.

It's a story that is based in a small town in Southern Italy - in a place called Riace.

Riace is in the Italian region of Calbria, with a population of 2000. The mayor of Riace has been welcoming refugees by giving them old abandoned homes Italian residents left behind, long ago. (piervincenzocanale, Flickr cc)

Domenico Lucano was born and raised in Riace. But with few jobs prospects, his town of Riace slowly emptied out by emigration. Domenico became mayor of ghost town and developed a plan to repopulate the village. He began welcoming refugees in an effort to revive his town and soon Riace became a home for people fleeing their homes for a better life.

Thanks to Riace, Endurance and her daughter have a chance for a better future.

And there's also Kalkidan. She moved to Riace two years ago and now works with local traditional weavers in the village.

"I came from Ethiopia. I spent 15 days crossing the Sahara desert and 3 days crossing the sea.  That was in 2013.  I left Ethiopia because of the war.  I came on my own. All my family is still there. Now things are better thank God.   I am healthy now.  When a place is calm and healthy then the people are calm and healthy. I am always thinking of my family that I left behind. One day I will return home to see them."- Kalkidan, traditional weaver in Riace, Italy

Listen to a preview of some of the other stories that we will be bringing you in this series. Anna Maria joins Piya in studio to share what is in the works for the new season of The Current.

Our season-long series Ripple Effect starts next week. We're going to be looking at the often hidden consequences of things like political decisions or accidents and follow the ripples to see who has been affected. Anna Maria joins Piya to tell us more.
