Why musician Brenley MacEachern believes The Handmaid's Tale is more relevant than ever
Singer-songwriter Brenley MacEachern is a Kincardine, Ont. native who, alongside Lisa MacIsaac, is part of Juno-nominated musical duo Madison Violet.
MacEachern spoke with The Next Chapter about her love of Margaret Atwood's dystopian sci-fi novel The Handmaid's Tale. This interview originally aired on Jan. 8, 2018.
"I just finished reading and watching The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood — and this book is terrifying. It's about a woman named Offred and she has been imprisoned by the state because she is fertile. In this society, this totalitarian society, there are very few fertile women left, so they've been taken hostage. It's such a scary book to talk about right now. Margaret Atwood puts a new foreword in the 2017 edition and they ask her, 'With this Trump administration could this happen?' And she said, "I'm going to say no, because I would never want to be part of predicting the future.'"
