Buckman Coe on why you should read Enrique's Journey by Sonia Nazario
Buckman Coe is Vancouver-based singer-songwriter who recently read Enrique's Journey by Sonia Nazario. Here's why you should read it too.
It tells the incredible true story of a young man, who is 17 years old, who takes this perilous journey on the tops of trains, from Honduras to America. The author is one of those intrepid journalists who painstakingly researches everything. For this book, it was incredibly dangerous. She actually rode on top of trains and does the same route Enrique did. She did a ton of research into the lives of these migrants who are making their way from Central America and Mexico to the United States. There are all these young people who enter the United States illegally, often without their parents. This is a story she tells of this boy, Enrique who goes to find his mother, who left him when he was 5 years old to go to America. It's a painful read at times. It's also a beautiful story of hope and and courage and determination and overcoming terrible odds.
