Indigenous authors making waves in the literary world

It has been a busy time in the Indigenous literary world lately. It seems, wherever you look, a hot new title is hitting bookstore shelves. This week on Unreserved, we hear from Indigenous authors making waves across Turtle Island.

It has been a busy time in the Indigenous literary world lately. It seems, wherever you look, a hot new title is hitting bookstore shelves.

This week on Unreserved, we hear from some Indigenous authors making waves across Turtle Island.

Angeline Boulley's debut novel, Firekeeper's Daughter, follows the journey of Daunis, a young mixed-blood Anishinaabe woman navigating life between worlds. It's one of the most anticipated novels of the year and is being adapted for TV by the Obamas' Higher Ground production company.

Joshua Whitehead made Canada Reads history. The oji-nehiyaw writer is the first Indigenous author to win Canada Reads. His book, Jonny Appleseed, was successfully defended by Kanienʼkehá꞉ka actor Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs.

Tasha Spillett-Sumner usually writes graphic novels, but her latest book is for little ones. I Sang You Down From the Stars is a picture book about preparing for a baby and the gifts of parenthood. The book was illustrated by Caldecott Medal winner Tlingit artist Michaela Goade.

Return of the Trickster is the third and final book in Eden Robinson's wildly popular Trickster trilogy. She'll talk about what it's like to leave these characters behind.
