Wells will return to Blue Jays lineup on Wednesday
Toronto also gives 'one-hit wonder' Morrow a rest
Blue Jays centre-fielder Vernon Wells said he could have played Tuesday with his dislocated right big toe but was forced to sit out until Wednesday.
He was injured Sunday, making a sensational catch while flying into the wall in centre to preserve Brandon Morrow's no-hit bid.
Rotation shuffle
The Blue Jays have shuffled their starting rotation to give extra rest to Brandon Morrow, who threw 137 pitches in his one-hit gem Sunday, and Brett Cecil, who cut his right knee for three stitches while climbing stairs.
Morrow will be pushed back until next Tuesday in Oakland, giving him eight days off between outings. Cecil will be pushed back until Saturday at the Angels, giving his knee enough time to heal.
"The [stitches] should be out of there and he should be OK," said manager Cito Gaston.
Brad Mills will move up to start Thursday's series finale against the Red Sox and will be optioned down to triple-A Las Vegas right afterwards, with Marc Rzepczynski coming up to start Friday against the Angels.
"They're going to let me play [Wednesday]," said Wells. "They relocated [the toe] just after I dislocated it. No fractures, so it's just going to be sore. It's got some good colour to it."
Wells initially thought he broke his toe on the play and told left-fielder Dewayne Wise as much as they returned to the dugout following the catch to end the sixth inning. He underwent tests both Sunday and Monday to make sure the injury wasn't any worse.
"That's the best case scenario, no fracture, it was just a clean dislocation, no ligament damage which is huge," he said. "There's going to be some pain here and there but I you can kind of get through that knowing there's no more damage you can do to it."
Wells did several drills Tuesday and said he felt the toe hurt most while running. Transferring his weight during swings wasn't a problem.
"I thought it would but I took some swings and it felt OK," said Wells. "I don't think it's going to be an issue any ways. When you're in the moment you're not really thinking about it.
"I've played through worse."
