Sea Dogs down Screaming Eagles: CHL playoffs

The Saint John Sea Dogs pushed the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles to the brink of elimination in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoffs Tuesday with a 5-1 victory.

Tomas Jurco had a goal and two assists for No. 1 seed Saint John, which took a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven first-round series.

Jonathan Huberdeau and Steven Anthony each added a goal and an assist for Saint John, while Kevin Gagne also scored. Michael Kirkpatrick had three assists and Jacob DeSerres made 21 saves for the win.

Dany Potvin scored for Cape Breton and Andrew Hayes made 28 saves in the loss.

Game 4 is set for Wednesday in Sydney, N.S.

QMJHL

Juniors 2, Mooseheads 0

At Halifax, Trevor Parkes scored the winner with 1:08 left in the third period as Montreal took a 3-0 lead in its series with the Mooseheads.

Raphael Pouliot scored the Juniors' second goal with 25 seconds left in regulation. Jean-Francois Berube stopped 29 shots for the shutout.

Frederic Piche made 31 saves in defeat for Halifax, which will try to avoid elimination on home ice Wednesday.

Cataractes 3, Rocket 0

At Charlottetown, Gabriel Girard made 28 saves for the shutout as Shawinigan took a 2-1 lead in its series with P.E.I.

Anton Zlobin, Ryan Kavanagh and Yannick Veilleux had the goals for the Cataractes, who can take a stranglehold with a victory in Game 4 on Wednesday.

Evan Mosher stopped 30 shots in defeat for the Rocket.

Maineiacs 4, Wildcats 2

At Moncton, N.B., Michael Chaput and Cameron Critchlow each had a goal and an assist as Lewiston took a 2-1 lead in its series with the Wildcats.

Samuel Carrier and Alex Zafiris also scored for the Maineiacs. Nicholas Champion stopped 24 shots for the win.

Daniel Pettersson had both goals for Moncton, while Brandon Thibeau made 34 saves. Game 4 goes Wednesday in Moncton.

Remparts 9, Foreus 0

At Val-d'Or, Que., Alexandre Grenier led the way with a hat trick as the Quebec Remparts took a 3-0 lead in their series with the Foreurs.

Mirko Hoefflin and Frederick Roy each added a goal and two assists, while Mathieu Lavallee, Joel Champagne, Olivier Hinse and Vincent Barnard had the other goals for Quebec.

Game 4 goes Wednesday in Val-d'Or.

Voltigeurs 6, Sagueneens 4

At Chicoutimi, Que., Sean Couturier had two goals and an assist as Drummondville took a 3-0 lead in its series with the Sagueneens.

Mathieu Guertin, Andre Bouvet-Morrissette and Jonathan Oligny added a goal and an assist for the Voltiguers, while Andrew Randazzo also scored.

Napessis Andre, Rock Regimbald Billy Lacasse and Nicolas Therrien replied for Chicoutimi, which will look to avoid the sweep on home ice when Game 4 goes Wednesday.

Oceanic 7, Olympiques 4

At Rimouski, Que., Jarrad Struthers had two goals and an assist as the Oceanic got back in their series with Gatineau.

Felix Lefrancois added a goal and three assists for Rimouski, which still trails the series 2-1.

Jerome Gauthier-Leduc, Petr Straka, Alex Emond and Patrick Delisle-Houde had the other goals for the Oceanic, who host Game 4 on Wednesday.

Tye McGinn, with a goal and an assist, Mathieu Talbot, Nicolas Deslauriers and Adam Janosik replied for Gatineau.

Majors 4, Bulls 0

The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors cruised their way into the second round of the Ontario Hockey League playoffs thanks largely to their stingy goaltending.

J.P. Anderson posted his third straight shutout as the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors completed a four-game sweep of the Belleville Bulls with a 4-0 win Tuesday night in Ontario Hockey League playoff action.

Anderson, who made 21 saves Tuesday, didn't allow a goal in the last 215 minutes 47 seconds of the series. He allowed just one goal over the series on 79 shots.

Michael D'Orazio, Devante Smith-Pelly, Chris DeSousa and Maxim Kitsyn all scored for the top-seeded Majors, who advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Wolves 5, 67's 4 (OT)

At Sudbury,Ont., Josh McFadden scored a hat-trick, including a late third period goal to force overtime, and Mike Lomas scored the winner 33 seconds into the extra period as the Wolves sent favoured Ottawa to the brink of elimination.

Eric O'Dell also scored for the Wolves.

Marc Zanetti, Steven Janes, Sean Monahan and Ben Dubois scored for the 67's.

The Wolves, who entered the playoffs as the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference have a 3-0 stranglehold over No. 2 Ottawa in the first-round series. Sudbury can complete the sweep Thursday in Ottawa.

The 67's finished 31 points higher than Sudbury in the regular-season standings.

IceDogs 5, Battalion 1  

At St. Catharines, Ont., Mark Visentin made 35 saves as Niagara took a 3-0 lead over Brampton in their Eastern Conference quarter-final.

Jason Wilson, with a goal and an assist, Darren Archibald, Andrew Agozzino, Freddie Hamilton and David Pacan scored for the IceDogs.

Zach Bell replied for Brampton.

Niagara will look to complete the sweep Thursday night in Brampton, Ont.

Frontenacs 7, Generals 4

At Kingston, Ont., Nathan Moon scored three goals as the Frontenacs stayed alive with a win over Oshawa.

Mitch Lebar and Ryan Spooner had a goal and an assist while Sean Jones and Michael Fine also scored for the Kingston.

Christian Thomas and Calivn de Haan had a goal and an assist while Boone Jenner and Lucas Lessio also scored for Oshawa.

Oshawa leads the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarter-final 3-1. Game 5 is Friday in Oshawa, Ont.

Attack 5, Knights 3

At Owen Sound, Ont., Jesse Blacker scored a goal and two assists to lead the Attack over London.

The victory gives the Attack a 2-1 lead in their first-round best-of-seven series with Game 4 set for Thursday in London, Ont.

Joey Hishon, Brendan Childerley, Matt Stanisz and Liam Heelis each had a goal for the Attack.

Ryan Rupert scored twice and Seth Griffith had a goal for the Knights.

The game turned into a fight-filled affair with a combined 91 minutes in penalties handed out.

WHL

Warriors 4, Ice 0

In Moose Jaw, Sask., Thomas Heemskerk stopped all 28 shots he faced as the Moose Jaw Warriors blanked the Kootenay Ice 4-0 in Western Hockey League playoff action on Tuesday. The Warriors now lead their best-of-seven first-round series 2-1 with Game 4 on Wednesday in Moose Jaw.

Unlikely contributors Spencer Edwards, Joey Kornelsen, Antonin Honejsek and Dylan Hood scored for Moose Jaw. Jesse Paradis had two assists.

The quartet rotated on the checking line, doing a great job of containing Cody Eakin and the Ice's top line.

Rockets 7, Cougars 6

In Prince George, B.C., Mitchell Callahan scored two goals to power the Kelowna Rockets past the Prince George Cougars 7-6 in Western Hockey League playoff action Tuesday.

Kelowna has pulled into a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven quarter-final series. The Rockets can complete the sweep Wednesday in Prince George.

Brett Bulmer, Shane McColgan, Spencer Main, Zach Franko and Colton Heffley also scored for Kelowna.

Taylor Stefishen, with two, Sena Acolatse, Charles Inglis, Spencer Asuchak and Martin Marincin had the goals for the Cougars, who went 2-for-4 on the power play.

Adam Brown made 35 saves on 41 shots for the Rockets.

Americans 4, Giants 0

In Vancouver, Adam Hughesman scored two goals and Drew Owsley stopped 22 shots as the Tri-City Americans blanked the Vancouver Giants 4-0 in Western Hockey League playoff action Tuesday night.

The Americans lead the best-of-seven series 3-0. This marks the first time in the Giants' 10-year history that they have trailed a first-round series by three games. The Americans can complete the sweep Wednesday in Vancouver.  

Hughesman was playing his first game of the series after missing the final 12 games of the regular season and first two of the playoffs with a knee injury.

The Giants have not lost in the first round since 2004-05.
