Santo Condorelli, one of Canada's top medal hopes in swimming for the Olympics this summer, earned bronze in the men's 100-metre freestyle on Monday at a Games test event in Rio de Janeiro.

Marcelo Chierighini led Brazil to a 1-2 finish clocking 48.23 seconds, with compatriot Nicolas Nilo Oliveira second in 48.54.

Condorelli, fresh from earning his nomination to the Olympic team at the Canadian trials in Toronto last week, followed in 48.66.

Condorelli, from Kenora, Ont., was a half-second slower than his winning time at the trials.

He was fourth at the world championships in the 100-m free this past summer in Russia. Condorelli is the only Canadian at the event.
